The World Was an Island

By Abigail Anderson

⇔

ABIGAIL ANDERSON is a sophomore at Danville High School in Kentucky, where she is an A+ student. She wrote her first story in third grade and has always enjoyed writing. She will attend the creative writing summer program at Brown University in June 2015 and hopes it will give her a glimpse of what intensive writing is like. She enjoys reading, competing in her high school speech tournaments, and playing with her dog Allie. Here’s what she wrote about “The World Was an Island”:

Before I wrote this story, I was in a creative slump. I could only see what everyone else was writing about, and it seemed like all the good ideas were taken. Stories on love or family or other ideas were swirling in my mind, and I couldn’t seem to grasp my own. I cannot remember the exact day, but all of a sudden, I thought, “What about a story that has none of usual factors?” There is no beautiful romance, no death-defying action, no suave hero, nothing of the sort. I wanted it to be different from what people normally read; I wanted to shake things up a bit, and I hope this story does the job.

Day 5,843

It is the anniversary of the day I was born. That’s what my lifegiver says.

She says it like any other thing.

I see how it is because nothing changes this day. The sea still moves. The light still shines. The sand beneath my small feet is still hot, burning against my skin. I don’t move my feet, though. The burning is welcome.

It doesn’t bother me. It never did.

I view the sea, taking it in as I do every morning. It stretches far and wide, but my lifegiver told me that this is all there is. It is only us, and we are all that’s here. I feel lucky that we were chosen, that we are all that’s in this span of sea and land. She says it’s only this circle of land, and as far as my eye can see of water.

I sigh, the sight as beautiful as ever.

I hear the distant chimes, and I know my lifegiver is calling for me. I take one last glance at the water, sparkling under the light, but before I can run back to my lifegiver, something moves in the sky. I look up, shielding my eyes from the light. A bird swoops down, and I am scared. But it only lands softly in front of me with a piece of fabric tied to its back.

I move slowly to the object because I fear the bird. It just stares at me, so I unwrap. I then run back because the bird is too close to the sea. The sea is dangerous; my lifegiver says it can sweep you away, forever floating into an uncertain fate.

I avoid the poisonous waters.

At that moment, I hear the chimes a second time. I can’t let them ring a third; then I deserve a punishment.
